Letter to a Young Hustler. L2YH 3

 Dear Young Hustler,

Feels good to drop a few lines again,in a bid to encourage you.Let us never underestimate what a few kind words of hope and encouragement can do to a weary soul, especially in a world like ours- full of pain, brokenness and disappointments.

Recently I heard a new definition and a fresh perspective on adulthood, that got me thinking. The speaker(a wise man I might add),explained that adulthood begins, the moment you decide to stop being a receiver or collector from others, and become a giver and contributor,to other people's lives...the moment you accept personal responsibility for your life. Like I said,it got me thinking.

Most of us have developed what is called an "entitlement mentality". We believe the world "owes" us. We believe it owes us one breakthrough, success or prosperity, someway. It translates to the way we see our governments. We believe they owe us jobs, housing, health, etc. And then we grumble, murmur and complain, when they don't deliver. We wallow in self-pity and become grown up "cry babies",because the world doesn't seem to care.

If only we understood the truth- that nobody owes us anything,as such. Beyond a certain point of basic provisions, not even our parents owe us much. Little wonder some of the most successful people in all walks of life, throughout history, have grown up with little or no family and even public assistance. This lack of assistance and support, taught them to accept responsibility for their lives early enough. They learnt to depend only on themselves and God.

Am I saying we don't need people? Definitely not. We were created to work with and relate with one another. However, the mind-set and attitude of entitlement, creates a dependency pattern in many people, subconsciously. They begin to wait on an outside force or personality, before they can give themselves permission to dare their dreams. They believe that if they don't succeed,it is the fault of someone or something "out there". They haven't learnt to accept full and total responsibility for their lives and how it turns out- good or bad. This should not be you.

You must travel a different path. The path of the select few,who have come to realize that one of the requirements for greatness in life,is the acceptance of responsibility- for our lives, choices and actions, irrespective of what is happening out there. Government policies notwithstanding;family history and background nothwithstanding. The few who understand that the only thing they have absolute control over,is their personal thoughts, behaviours and attitudes- and that is all that matters in the equation.

So I encourage you my friend,to become a contributor and a giver. Give of your gifts, talents and capabilities,to the world. There is a unique deposit in you, that no other has. Don't let it die in you, while you only look to receive from others. Get rid of entitlement mentality. Become an adult indeed- and bless the world.

More on this subject,soon.

Till I write you again, keep the hustle alive.
